Intro
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is a standardised English language assessment test jointly administered worldwide by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia. It assesses the proficiency of non-native speakers to communicate effectively and independently in English. It tests the abilities of candidates in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Based on the score, it classifies the candidates taking the test into 9 bands or groups from Expert Users of English to Non Users.

IELTS And Australia
IELTS is used by the Australian government through the Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Australian Universities, and Australian professional bodies for assessing the English language skills of the person requesting immigration, to

pursue a course or to practice as a professional, respectively.
The governments and educational institutes of Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom also use IELTS.

IELTS And Australia Visa Processing
You need to show that you have a valid IELTS score in your visa application. It is a prerequisite for student visa and to live, though in some cases TOEFL scores are also accepted.

IELTS has two different modules, namely Academic module and General Training module to assess the skills of candidates. Which test is applicable to someone is decided by for what purpose the test is being taken. For candidates going for higher education or seeking professional registration an English speaking country, Academic Training is required while General Training is for those who are planning to immigrate, undertake non-academic training or work experience.
